Veterans’ Group Life Insurance (VGLI) is priced by age band. Your premium stays the same for five years, then moves up when you enter the next band. The table below uses the VA’s published rates, effective July 1, 2025, so you can see what you will pay today and what you will pay later.

What VGLI adds up to over time
A veteran who keeps $400,000 of VGLI from age 30 to age 60 pays $32 a month at first and $200 a month in the last five years, about $31,200 in total. At 60 the premium becomes $340 a month, and at 65 it becomes $552 a month.
That rising cost is the trade-off for VGLI’s biggest advantage: if you apply within 240 days of leaving the military, you get it without answering health questions.
