Life Insurance for SBA Loans

If you are buying or expanding a business with an SBA loan, your lender may require life insurance on you before the loan closes. We help Florida borrowers get the right amount of coverage from multiple carriers, assign the policy to the lender and keep the loan officer informed at every step, in English or Spanish.

When an SBA lender requires life insurance

SBA’s lending rules call for life insurance when a loan is not fully secured by collateral and the business depends on one owner’s active involvement, such as a sole proprietorship, a single-member LLC or a business that relies on its owner day to day. Lenders can also require it under their own credit policies.

The policy is not paid to your family first. It is assigned to the lender as collateral, so if the owner dies, the lender is repaid from the death benefit and the rest goes to your beneficiaries. The insurer must acknowledge the assignment, and most lenders want that acknowledgment before closing.

How much coverage you need

Lenders usually ask for coverage equal to the unsecured part of the loan: the loan amount minus the value the lender gives your collateral after its own discount. Some lenders ask for more, up to the full loan amount. Your loan officer gives you the final number; the calculator below gives you a starting point.

Estimated coverage needed

Estimate only. Your lender sets the required amount and may ask for more, for example coverage equal to the full loan. SBA guidance calls for life insurance when a loan is not fully secured and the business depends on one owner; the policy is assigned to the lender, and the insurer acknowledges the assignment. We handle that paperwork with your loan officer.

How the process works

1. Your loan officer refers you, or you contact us

We confirm the required amount, the lender’s exact name for the assignment and your target closing date.

2. You apply

Many applicants qualify for term coverage with no medical exam, with a decision in days. Larger amounts or some health histories need full underwriting, which can take several weeks, so start as soon as the lender tells you coverage is required.

3. The policy is issued and assigned

Once the policy is in force, we file the collateral assignment with the insurer and send the acknowledged copy to your lender.

4. When the loan is paid off

The lender releases the assignment and the full policy belongs to your beneficiaries again. Many owners keep the policy for their family or business partners.

Which policy fits an SBA loan

Most borrowers choose term life insurance with a term at least as long as the loan, because it is usually the least expensive way to cover a fixed debt. If you already own a policy, it may be possible to assign it instead of buying a new one; we check whether the amount and the policy type meet the lender’s requirement.

Frequently asked questions

Does the SBA or my lender choose the insurance company?

No. You can buy the policy from any licensed carrier. The lender only needs the right amount, the assignment and the insurer’s acknowledgment.

Who is the beneficiary?

You name your own beneficiaries. The collateral assignment gives the lender first claim up to the unpaid loan balance; anything above that goes to your beneficiaries.

What if I can’t qualify for coverage?

Tell your loan officer early. Lenders have ways to handle a borrower who cannot get coverage, and a declined application at one carrier does not mean every carrier will decline. We shop the case across multiple carriers.

How long does it take?

No-exam term decisions can take days; fully underwritten policies often take three to six weeks. Starting when you receive the loan commitment keeps insurance from delaying your closing.
