1. How the Calculator Works
The tool uses the DIME method—Debt, Income, Mortgage, Education—then layers Florida cost multipliers.
| Step | Input | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Debts (auto, credit cards, loans) | User input |
| 2 | Income replacement (years × salary) | 12× slider default |
| 3 | Mortgage payoff | Zillow median values by ZIP |
| 4 | Education fund per child | FL Dept. of Education tuition tables |
| 5 | Final expenses | Fixed $15 k or user input |
The calculator sums these to create a Recommended Death Benefit (RDB). You can then adjust term length (10-40 years) and evaluate premium impact.
2. Florida-Specific Data Inputs
| Cost Item | State Average 2025 | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 30-yr Fixed Mortgage Rate | 6.9 % | Freddie Mac, May 2025 |
| Median Home Price (FL) | $415,000 | Zillow April 2025 |
| Childcare (Infant, per year) | $10,440 | Economic Policy Institute |
| 4-Year Public In-State Tuition | $23,600 | FL DOE 2025 |
These defaults auto-populate but can be overridden.
3. Sample Scenarios & Outputs
Scenario A – Young Family, Florida
- Household Income: $110 k
- Mortgage: $375 k balance, 25 yrs left
- Children: Ages 2 & newborn
- Debts: $25 k student loan, $10 k auto
- Result: RDB = $1.2 M
- Premium Snapshot (illustrative): $1 M 20-yr term + $250 k 30-yr term = $64/mo (male 32 + female 30)
Scenario B – Business Owner, Tampa
- Income: $220 k
- Mortgage: $0 (paid)
- Kids: 12 & 14
- SBA Loan: $300 k, 10 yrs
- RDB: $2.4 M
- Strategy: $1.5 M 15-yr term + $1 M 20-yr term → $128/mo (male 45, Preferred)
4. Term vs. Ladder vs. Blended Strategy
| Strategy | Monthly Premium (Male 35 NS) | 20-Year Protection | 30-Year Protection | Cash Value |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single 30-yr $750 k | $85 | $750 k | $750 k | — |
| 20-yr $500 k + 30-yr $250 k | $66 | $750 k | $250 k | — |
| Ladder + $50 k Whole Life | $89 | $750 k | $300 k + $50 k permanent | $28 k at age 65 |
Takeaway: Laddering plus a small whole-life rider offers near-identical cost to a lone 30-year term while layering lifelong coverage and cash value.

How this is calculated
There is no single correct answer to how much life insurance a household needs, so this calculator runs the two methods the industry actually uses and shows both. Every number below is one you can change, and every assumption that is not your own figure is named with its source.
DIME — Debt, Income, Mortgage, Education
DIME adds up the specific obligations your household would still have to meet, then subtracts what is already in place. It is concrete and easy to check line by line, and it tends to produce the smaller of the two figures because it stops at the obligations you can name.
(debts + final expenses + mortgage) + (income x years replaced) + (children x years x cost per year) - (existing cover + savings)
Human Life Value
Human Life Value asks a different question: what are your earnings worth to your household over the years you would have kept working? It takes your income, removes the share you spend on yourself, and discounts the remaining years back to today’s money. It usually produces the larger figure, and it is the one that captures what a long career is actually worth.
annual income x (1 - share you consume) x [1 - (1 + rate)^-years] / rate - (existing cover + savings)
Starting assumptions, and where each one comes from
| Assumption | Default | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Full retirement age | 67 years | Social Security Administration, for anyone born 1960 or later |
| Cost per year of study | $11,950 | College Board, published tuition and fees, four-year in-state public, 2025-26. Housing and food are additional. |
| Years of income replaced | 10 years | A rule of thumb, not a published figure. Set it to your own circumstances. |
| Share of income consumed by the earner | 25% | A common convention in Human Life Value work, not a published figure. |
| Discount rate after inflation | 3% | A convention, not a published figure or a projection of returns. |

Important
This is an estimate, not a recommendation. It uses only the figures you entered and the assumptions shown, it does not consider your full financial picture, and no one at Lifeworth has reviewed it.
The two methods often disagree, sometimes by a wide margin. That is expected. Neither is the right number on its own; they are two starting points for a conversation.
Nothing here is an offer of insurance. No policy exists until an application is submitted, underwritten and approved, and what you would pay depends on your age, your health and the insurer.

Common questions
Why do the two methods give different answers?
They answer different questions. DIME adds up the obligations your family would still face; Human Life Value measures what your future earnings are worth to them. Many households look at both and settle somewhere between.
Should I count the life insurance I have through work?
Count it, but know it usually depends on the job. Group coverage often ends or has to be converted when you leave an employer, so a household relying on it has a gap the day employment changes.
Do beneficiaries pay income tax on a life insurance payout?
Generally not: a death benefit paid because the insured died is usually not taxable income to the beneficiary. Interest paid on top of it, and some ownership arrangements, can be. This is general information, not tax advice.

6. FAQs
How accurate are premium estimates?
Quotes use 2025 rate tables for Preferred Non-Smoker. Final rate depends on underwriting class—usually within ±10 %.
What about inflation?
Use the CPI slider. A 4% inflation assumption bumps education and income replacement needs by ≈15 % over 20 years.
Does the calculator handle business insurance (Key-Person)?
Your Lifeworth Insurance advisor can manually model business valuation and debt payoff for you.
Is the tool free?
100 % free. No commitment of any kind required. Optionally, you’ll receive a PDF report and advisor call.
